One could take an entire portable library with them on a trip, and not even take up the space of a whole book.
Then, there is the growing popularity of web-novels, web serials, and even fan fiction. Many notable best-sellers began on fan fiction forums, with erotic romances like 50 Shades of Grey being the most noteworthy. But, even original web serials have been met with incredible success. Video Games
The video game industry is often thought of as the “industry of the 21st century.” By no means is it the biggest entertainment industry today. However, it is an industry that came to mainstream prominence in the 21st century. The reason for this is simple; the 21st century was the era when video games progressed from linear, 2D platformers to high-budget spectacles. Of course, that would not be possible without advancements in digital technology.
Even the indie titles that get prominence nowadays have incredible graphics. Titles like Hades, Binding of Isaac, and Hollow Knight not only play fantastic, but look fantastic. The movements and animations of the characters are far superior from what you would expect from an independent studio. Of course, graphics are not all that video games are about. There is also the gameplay and interactivity.
Gameplay and mechanics have obviously improved. But, interactivity has also drastically bettered, in large part thanks to the internet. Online multiplayer is a huge part of many video game franchises, like Call of Duty, Modern Warfare, and of course, the entire fighting game genre. The online multiplayer is such a huge aspect of the modern video game industry, that many of the best-selling games are entirely based around gaming online with friends or total strangers.
Music
If gambling is not the oldest form of entertainment on this list, then music certainly is. Since the prehistoric era, humans have entertained themselves by attempting to imitate the rhythmic sounds of nature. We have archeological evidence of instruments dating back to the pre-Ancient world. And of course, singing is as old as the human lung.
Throughout history, music has undergone quite a lot of changes. Humans invented different instruments depending on their circumstances. Of course, singing itself has undergone quite a bit of change. But, music remained recognizable in some form. Today, digital technology has made it possible for anyone to create their own music, which might not even be recognizable outside of very specific cultures.
But, even the popular music of our time has seen some incredible developments, that would never have been possible even a couple of decades ago. The internet alone has had a huge impact on music creation, distribution, and engagement. Both big-name artists as well as indie ones are now free to publish their latest songs online, which gives them the opportunity to share music to a much broader audience.
